Killer instinct

Di recente ho visto Valhalla rising, un film che unisce vichinghi e metafisica. So che molti sono rimasti perplessi riguardo a questo connubio, che invece a me è garbato molto, così come mi è garbato molto Mads Mikkelsen nei panni del protagonista One eye, uno con un discreto talento nell'uccidere a mani nude.

I've recently seen Valhalla rising, a movie that merges Vikings and the metaphysical. I know many have been unimpressed with this mix, but I actually really liked it, just as I liked Mads Mikkelsen as One Eye - the main character and a very talented dude when it comes to killing with his bare hands.



Ho voluto riprendere questo stile ma aggiungendoci un po' di colore. I primi sei livelli sono stati realizzati col pennello Acrylic/stringy di Paint Tool SAI, poi i ritocchi finali, le texture, ecc. sono stati aggiunti a Photoshop.

I wanted to use this style but with some more color. The first six layers are in Paint Tool SAI, painted with the acrylic/stringy brush, then I used Photoshop to add detail, textures and final adjustments.

Troppa Grazia

Adesso che la mia settimana come ospite sul blog di Grazia è finita, posso pubblicare anche qui la pinup che ho disegnato per l'occasione, più un paio di illustrazioni scartate che ho finito cinque minuti fa.

Questo è uno speedpainting di Megan Fox che ho fatto qualche tempo fa guardando Jennifer's body, un film che ho trovato interessante più per le sue potenzialità inespresse che per quello che si è effettivamente visto sullo schermo (ma Agony Aunt lo dice molto meglio di me). In realtà era solo un pretesto per giocare con Paint Tool SAI, un programma simile a Painter in quanto imita in parte le caratteristiche delle tecniche naturali e permette di mescolare i colori. Ma ha una scelta di pennelli molto più limitata, e non sempre l'effetto "soft" che rende è ciò che cerco. Tuttavia ha il pregio di essere molto leggero (al contrario di quei pachidermi di Painter e di PS), e permette di realizzare delle linee molto fluide e precise.

This is a Megan Fox speedpainting I did a while ago while watching Jennifer's body - a movie I liked more for its potential than for how it actually expressed it. This is basically an exercise in Paint Tool SAI, a software similar to Painter as it tries to imitate natiral media and can blend colors. However, its choice in brushes is very limited compared to Painter, and the soft feel it gives to the painting isn't always what I aim for. On the other hand, it is very light (unlike Painter and PS), and it allows fluid, flawless lines.

Questa è la realizzazione passo passo del disegno di cui sopra. Ho usato SAI fino ai ritocchi finali con texture e contrasto, dove sono passata a Photoshop.

This is the process for the top picture. I used SAI until the very end, where I switched to Photoshop to add the texture and add a "sharpen" filter.

Ho visto Alexander di Oliver Stone solo di recente, e, sebbene sia oggettivamente un film di qualità MOLTO altalenante, le cose da salvare per me sono state sufficienti per tenermi davanti allo schermo fino alla fine (qui c'è un'interessantissima recensione in inglese, che mi trova d'accordo, anche se non sono esperta di storia antica; riparliamone quando uscirà un film sui Borgia, allora sì che potrò fare la maestrina ;) ). La mia scena preferita è quella dell'omicidio di Filippo, soprattutto mi era piaciuto il vestito rosso di Olimpiade in mezzo a un bianco accecante. Questo speedpainting non vuole essere un'illustrazione di quella scena, ma l'ho voluta citare perché mi sembrava emblematica per il personaggio di Olimpiade. Tra l'altro non volevo fare un ritratto di Angelina Jolie, ma, per quanto abbia anche lei un volto anacronistico quanto Farrell, disegnare un personaggio somigliante è venuto naturale... forse perché la trovo più attraente del buon Colin, lol.

I saw Alexander by Oliver Stone only recently, and while it's VERY hit and miss in terms of quality, the good things were enough to keep me captivated until the end (here is a very informative essay which I basically agree with, although I am no expert in ancient history - come back to me with a Borgia film and *there* I'll tell you if they are Doing It Wrong :) ). My favorite scene was the murder of Philip - I especially liked Olympias's red dress among the blinding white of the arena. This speedpainting isn't really an illustration of that scene, but I still referenced it because I think it visually told a lot about Olympias. I didn't want to do an Angelina Jolie portrait either, but, even if her face is as anachronistic as Colin Farrell's, drawing a character that resembled her just felt natural... must be because I think she's hotter than ol' Colin, lol.

Ancora qualche dettaglio della realizzazione. In questo caso ho lavorato al 99% in Photoshop soprattutto con i pennelli di Alex Dukal, gli stessi che ho usato qui. Inoltre, ho aggiunto una texture prima di finire il disegno per poi continuare a lavorarci sopra. Volevo anche un motivo coi serpenti, l'animale-simbolo di Olimpiade, per rendere lo sfondo meno monotono, quindi ho ricalcato la figura di un ouroboros.
Alla fine, sono passata a SAI per degli accenti minuscoli (e perché aprire Photoshop lì per lì mi pesava... tante volte è una motivazione più che sufficiente perché gli preferisca questo programmino) e per ridisegnare la mano, che non mi convinceva. Il pennello "pastello" di SAI è texturizzato e secondo me ottimo per dipingere la pelle in modo naturale. Alla fine, sono tornata a Photoshop per il solito smart sharpen ed è finita lì :)

Other process details. This picture is 99% Photoshop with Alex Dukal's brushes, the same I used here. I also added a texture before finishing painting, so I could paint over it. I also wanted to make the background less dull with a snake motif, since it's Olympias animal, so I traced an ourobouros clipart.
Eventually, I switched to SAI for very minimal touches (and because I didn't feel like loading Photoshop right there and then... sometimes that's enough to make me opt for this little software instead) and so I could paint over her hand, which ended up looking off to me. The "pastel" brush in SAI is nicely textured and very useful to paint natural skin. In the end, I went back to PS for the usual smart sharpen and that was it :)

Forse alcuni l'avranno già visto sul tumblr, ma mi sembrava giusto cominciare con uno speedpainting recente, fatto per testare la mia nuova Bamboo Fun. Certo, lo so che quelli bravi usano come minimo l'Intuos, ma me li danno loro i 170 euro di differenza, okay? Nei prossimi post, conto di recuperare un po' di roba che ho sparso per la Rete o che ho tenuto per me nei mesi in cui ho ignorato il mio povero blog. Una prece.

This might look familiar to those who follow my tumblr, but I wanted to start with a recent speedpainting, which was made to test my new Bamboo Fun. Yeah, I know all the cool kids use an Intuos, but I guess said kids also had the 170 euros that set the Bamboo apart from the Intuos at the store. In the coming posts, I'm going to share some older stuff I made while I was neglecting the old blog. Poor thing.
